Words, From Mankind
A book talking about 4 Hong Kong traditional hand-crafted typography.
I believe such a local culture should be well-kept and protected,
and the book is designed to promote these nearly endangered culture of Hong Kong.
As technology making huge strides each day,
Hand-crafted typography is replaced by computer,
it is coming to the dark ages of the culture, so the book design is mainly in black.
But still, Hand-crafted typography got something that digital typography cannot archive,
It was a meaningful and a big project to work for, as we started from scratch, every words, every pieces of the book is created by us, a 4 people work. The text for the content is written separately and equally by 4 of us.
Also, we got a chance to interview 4 local typography craftsman, who specialised in a unique handmade typography, and that's the 4 chapters of the book.
As a documentary book, each chapter includes the background story of the craftsman, the ways and tools of making that kind of typography, also some thoughts of the craftsman upon their career.
For the design of the book, it was covered with a iconic bags from Hong Kong, with that red, white, blue pattern, and a black on black printing effect to present a pathetic message, "The hand-crafted typography is dying."
It is a photography-based book, which the content are based on the photo that I took at the interviews with those craftsman. So the book contains a lots of photos that occupied the whole spread.
Also, the layout and grid is set to be simple and comfortable.
Although it is hard to deliver a sense of touch through photography, still, I wanted to emphasis the texture and feeling each typography from every photos.
